The afternoon rush hour is a dangerous time to drive

On Behalf of | Mar 3, 2026 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

There are noticeable trends in motor vehicle collisions. Those trends include locations where crashes occur and what types of crashes have the highest risk of injury or death. Timing is also a critical factor when looking at the likelihood of a serious wreck.

Many people, especially those who have recently taught a teen to drive, might be aware that driving after dark is a dangerous act. Restricted licenses for young adults limit driving after dark for that exact reason.

However, there is a second time of day that is also high risk according to the National Safety Council (NSC). People who are on the road during the weekday afternoon rush hour are at increased risk of a wreck.

Why is rush hour so dangerous?

The morning rush hour or commute to work does not generate the same increase in risk as the drive home after work does. There are multiple factors that contribute to enhanced collision risk between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on weeknights.

Afternoon fatigue after a long day at work can affect driver safety. If a driver stops at happy hour, their intoxication can also be a safety concern. The overall volume of traffic tends to be heavier as people drive home from work. Distraction is also a risk factor, as employees might feel compelled to answer a call or return an email from their boss while on the way home.

Anyone involved in an afternoon rush hour collision may need assistance pursuing compensation for their property damage and personal injury lawsuits. Reviewing collision circumstances with a personal injury lawyer can help those hurt in collisions take the right steps for their own protection.
