How driver fatigue can impact road safety

On Behalf of | Sep 2, 2025 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Fatigue is a common issue among working adults. The need to balance full-time employment, family obligations and household maintenance can leave people without enough time to fulfill their obligations.

When people spread themselves too thin, they may limit how much time they allow themselves to rest. Sleeping too little and going too long without deep sleep are both dangerous personal practices. Not only can a lack of rest affect individuals’ long-term health, it can also put them at risk of causing a crash due to their drowsiness.

Why is drowsy driving dangerous?

The idea that driving while tired is risky may seem strange. After all, many people have acclimated to operating on less-than-adequate rest. They may be unaware of how their insufficient sleep affects their performance on the road. People who are too tired to remain alert can doze off at the wheel, which can have devastating consequences.

Even if people manage to remain awake, they could easily cause devastating collisions. According to research into sleep deprivation, people who have gone 20 hours or more without sleep display the same level of impaired ability as those who are at the legal limit for their blood alcohol concentration.

Fatigue affects reaction times, decision-making abilities and focus. While it may not be possible to conclusively show that a driver’s fatigue caused a crash, people can likely point to inappropriate maneuvers and poor surveillance as the underlying causes of the wreck.

Holding a drowsy driver accountable for causing a motor vehicle collision might involve an insurance claim or possibly a lawsuit. Those harmed by drowsy drivers may have the right to pursue compensation for the losses they’ve sustained because of a preventable crash.
