Potential causes of rear-end accidents

On Behalf of | Jul 10, 2025 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Rear-end accidents can be impossible to avoid. A driver may look in their rearview mirror and see that the crash is about to take place, but there’s no way for them to get out of the way in time. Some drivers who are injured in rear-end crashes develop PTSD, where they are constantly afraid that the driver behind them is going to strike their vehicle.

As a general rule, the following driver has an obligation to avoid the accident, so they are held at fault when these crashes occur. Below are some reasons why these accidents take place.

Distracted driving

Distracted driving is very common, especially when it comes to cellphone use. Drivers can also be distracted by music, eating and drinking, talking to children or passengers and much else. If they’re looking away from the road, a rear-end crash is much more likely.

Aggressive driving

Excessive speeding is a form of aggressive driving, and it reduces reaction times. A driver who is going far too fast for conditions or breaking the speed limit may simply not have space to stop, even if they slam on the brakes. Tailgating is also a serious issue, as a driver who fails to maintain a proper following distance may have no hope of stopping if conditions unexpectedly change ahead of them.

Impaired or fatigued driving

Both fatigued driving and impaired driving can be issues because drivers react more slowly to conditions on the road. Additionally, both of these issues could cause the driver to pass out or nod off behind the wheel, so they’re no longer in control of their vehicle.

If you’ve been rear-ended by a negligent driver, you may have suffered serious back injuries, head injuries, whiplash and much else. Be sure you know how to seek appropriate financial compensation.
