There are many driving hazards, some of which are easier to avoid than others. For instance, both texting and driving and impaired driving are major issues that cause numerous car accidents every year. But both of them could easily be avoided if drivers simply made better decisions and turned off their cellphones or refused to drive if they had been drinking or using other substances.
Unfortunately, there are some hazards that are a lot more difficult to avoid, so the risks remain. One of these is inexperience. It is often cited as one of the main reasons that teenage drivers have a fatal crash rate that’s three times as high as other age groups. They are disproportionately likely to cause serious accidents simply because they lack experience behind the wheel.
Why can’t this issue be solved?
There are certainly steps that have been taken to address this experience issue. Young drivers have to take tests and go through training. They spend time driving with an instructor and honing their skills. Many of them will then drive with another adult, such as a parent, where they continue to work on their driving abilities. Ideally, they can make mistakes and gain experience at this time without causing a crash.
But ultimately, the only remedy for a lack of experience is more time behind the wheel. Eventually, teens just have to drive on their own. They grow safer over time, but some of them will inevitably cause accidents as they gain this valuable experience.
For other drivers on the road, this means there’s always a risk of being injured in one of these car crashes. If this has happened to you, take the time to look into all of your legal options carefully.
