New safety projects for the state focus on intersections

On Behalf of | Mar 14, 2025 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

There’s no doubt that intersections – even those with traffic lights and marked crosswalks – are among the most dangerous places on the road. That’s true whether you’re in a car, on a motorcycle, bike or scooter or on foot. Of course, the consequences of intersection incidents can be particularly serious for those who don’t have a vehicle around them for protection.

As a result, it is unsurprising that many of the 31 projects recently announced by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) throughout the state involve modernization and upgrades to intersections. The projects are funded by over $20 million collected by the Automated Red-Light Enforcement (ARLE) program from those caught on camera running red lights. Specifically, ARLE is used at nearly 40 intersections around Philadelphia.

What do the safety projects involve?

The funds will be distributed to 17 counties, including Luzerne, based on their applications. The funds are earmarked for approved projects involving:

  • Modernization and upgrades of existing traffic signals
  • Installation of new traffic signals
  • Installation of new crosswalks
  • New road markings
  • Installation of cameras and radar detection equipment
  • Improved intersection safety for public transit users

The project that was approved for Luzerne County involves adding a mid-block pedestrian crossing over Route 2007 (East Northampton Street) in Laurel Run.

When Pennsylvania traffic safety professionals talk about “traffic signal modernization,” they’re typically referring upgrading older traffic signals so that they use the latest technology, including LED lights and the latest in timers.

Safety modifications can’t guarantee safe driving

Projects like these are part of a larger overall strategy by Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration to “invest in Pennsylvania’s infrastructure and help keep communities connected safely to opportunity and each other.” However, they can’t provide guarantees that drivers will obey traffic lights and use the necessary caution around crosswalks.

When a negligent or reckless driver harms someone or worse, it’s crucial to seek fair compensation for medical bills and other expenses and damages. It can be challenging to do that while someone is healing or mourning the loss of a loved one. That’s one reason why it’s wise to have experienced legal guidance when navigating the aftermath of a collision.
