Snow driving tips to avoid accidents

On Behalf of | Jan 23, 2025 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Driving on snow and ice can be incredibly hazardous and drastically increases the odds of a car accident. Many drivers lose control of their vehicles or are unable to stop in time.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to keep yourself safer in these conditions. Below are a few tips to keep in mind.

Avoid using the brakes

It may feel natural to use the brakes to slow or stop your vehicle, and this works well on dry summer roads. However, on icy surfaces, aggressive braking can cause your tires to lose traction, leading to a loss of control. A better approach is to use engine braking—simply take your foot off the gas and allow the car to slow down gradually and naturally as it moves to lower gears.

Be cautious when making turns

It’s crucial to slow down more than you think is necessary when approaching a turn. Even a speed that feels safe on a straight road can quickly become too fast when navigating a curve or turning onto a side street. Driving too fast during a turn can cause your car to spin out or slide into oncoming traffic.

Make smooth and controlled maneuvers

As a general rule, aim to drive in a controlled and careful manner. Avoid abrupt movements, as the lack of traction on icy roads could cause your vehicle to slide. Give yourself extra space by maintaining a greater following distance, ensuring you have enough time to stop if necessary.

After an accident

These tips can help reduce your risk of a crash, but accidents can still happen—especially if another driver is reckless or negligent. If you’ve been injured in an accident caused by someone else, take the time to explore your legal options.
