What is distracted driving?

On Behalf of | Jun 6, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Drunk driving is one of the largest causes of auto accidents. When a driver is behind the wheel after drinking alcohol, they are often aware of their condition, but that makes it no less dangerous. Another large cause of driving accidents is distracted driving.

Distracted driving happens when a driver looks away from the road, takes their hands off the wheel or lets their mind wander away from the task at hand. However, far fewer people are aware they are distracted while driving. Here are a few common causes of distracted driving

Texting and driving

One of the biggest perpetrators of distracted driving is phones. Many people will text or talk to people over the phone while driving without considering the dangers. Phones can be especially distracting when they make notification sounds.

Eating and driving

Another cause of distracted driving is food. Many people will stop at fast-food restaurants for a quick bite and continue driving to their destination. However, eating and driving require more concentration than many people realize.

Pets and children

Pets and children can be distracting even while people are not driving. Pets and children may be overly demanding for the driver’s attention, leading them to lose focus on the road.

AC and radio

ACs and radios are built into cars, which may cause many people to overlook the dangers of using them. However, drivers may give these devices a lot of attention while they are driving, which can lead to auto accidents.

If you were involved in an auto accident because another driver was distracted, you might be entitled to compensation for your injuries, damages and losses.
