Pennsylvania is a safer place to work than some states

Pennsylvania may not be the safest place to work, but it’s also not the most dangerous, according to a report by Allsup, a firm that provides Social Security disability insurance. Maine is the most dangerous place to work, while New York and the nation’s capitol are the safest.

The study says more than one million people are injured in the workplace every year, losing a minimum of one day’s work. Maine’s workplace injury rate is 1.4 people per 100 workers. The average for New York and Washington, D.C., is .1 worker injured for every 100 workers. Pennsylvania falls between the two, averaging .8 workers injured for every 100 employees. Other states with the same injury rate as Pennsylvania include Alabama, Michigan, Washington and Oregon.

Allsup based their ratings on the number of days that people lost from work or had to be transferred to another job while they were recuperating from workplace injuries. The firm compiled their report from data available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics. Allsup’s statistics showed that 36,900 Pennsylvania workers filed workers’ compensation claims for injuries or work-related illnesses in 2011.

A serious workplace injury can be devastating to the worker and their family, especially if the worker misses work for a long time. Workers’ compensation may be available to ease the financial burden caused by heavy medical expenses and lost wages. However, difficulties, such as denial of benefits, can arise in the claim process, necessitating the need for a workers’ compensation attorney. A workers’ compensation attorney may be able to make sure that the injured worker’s rights are protected.
