A driver, blinded by the sun, turned a corner and struck a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation employee. The man was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for the treatment of his injuries.
The man was working traffic control when he was hit. The driver of the small truck claims to have not seen the flagman standing in the intersection. A witness stated that the truck was moving slowly as it hit the flagman, who then fell to the ground. A co-worker ran to the injured man’s aid. Police stated that the incident is under investigation, but it is not likely that the driver will be facing any charges. The conditions reported meet the criteria of a true accident.
Work zones create additional roadway hazards. Transportation construction workers, such as flagmen, are at a higher risk for workplace accidents and injuries. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 20,000 road construction workers are injured in work zones annually. Drivers are encouraged to slow down and proceed with caution when approaching roadway construction sites.
The flagman who was struck may suffer financially as a result of the accident. He may have to pay hospital bills in addition to any lost wages if he cannot return to work for a while. He might be eligible for workers’ compensation to pay for these expenses.
